In Meditation on Violence Rotoscope, 2012
In Meditation on Violence Rotoscope, 2012, is meditational video art that incorporates the existence of technology and the meditative qualities of repetition.
There’s an old saying, “There is joy in repetition.” The sublimation of wayward energy; movement transfigured into ritual, the slowing turning precision of a diamond; achieving a place where we are mesmerised, intoxicated and calm.
In Maya Deren’s film (Meditation on Violence,1948) Chao Li Chi’s performance attempts to interpret the philosophy of the (original) Wu Tang Clan, where perfect form is that of no form, or a state of constant motion. The rotoscope technique extends – literally – the original performance, it uses the relationship between the camera and the performer to generate a rhythmic abstract expression.
