Moving Beyond Representation: WFAWWPIIEAMDATINA.

These works are an extension of Epiphany’s recent solo ‘What It Took To Get Here: MPDIHSTDCBAQLB.’

There exists a critical need to move beyond institutional critique. The spaces in which we live and occupy must move beyond the mere representation of culturally and linguistically diverse peoples. This body of work mirrors and critiques the current trend of diverse and inclusive practices in social and professional spaces. ‘Moving Beyond Representation’ seeks to encourage a more considered and broadened approach to diversity and inclusion. It ought not be a mere response or knee-jerk reaction to racism, or the lack of representation of culturally diverse communities.

The material nature of these works (the steel frame and concrete canvas) reflects the notion of being a marginalised person who is working within debilitating structures and frameworks. We note that these tangible structures and frameworks maintain their polished state by both those in positions of power and those working within these systems despite their best intentions.

Three motifs have been selected and painted in oil on a concrete surface which, ultimately, may not guarantee their maintenance nor their survival.
‍
putto - The presence of the 'Divine,' and a connection between heaven and earth, or in this context the connection between marginalised peoples and the promise of a future utopia. This putto is a deserter, abdicating his divine role.

phrenology - The now debunked pseudoscience which was inherently racist, responsible for the abhorrent justification of slavery of both First Nations American and African people in the US.
