‘Making Through It’ is a reflection on art making and existence in our shared moment of extinction and upheaval from the perspective of Zeth Cameron, Josh Van Eymeren and Nicky Tsekouras. The three have been resident artists at Yarra Youth Services for the last 18 months, during this time they have found parallels between their practices in their queerness and responsiveness to collective struggles. The exhibition spans themes of identity, family history, play, corporate attire, anger, government systems and the death of ideals under neoliberalism.

Nicky Tsekouras

Nicky Tsekouras (they/he) is an emerging, queer and multi-disciplinary artist practicing on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. Their practice features a deep desire for personal identity dissection and discussion through colourful and captivating outlets. Ideas explored include queerness, late capitalism, sustainability and their culture. Disruption of conventional art-making practices is increasingly becoming more prevalent as they explore new ways of navigating and responding to their surroundings and prioritising sustainable and found materials.

Josh Van Eymeren

Josh Van Eymeren (they/them) is an emerging artist practicing on the unceded lands of the Wurrundjeri and Woiwurrung people. Their practice explores and emotively responds to the web of neoliberal power structures from their perspective as a working-class painter. They use images from their daily life in conjunction with news media to pose questions pose on how we as a society have gotten to where we are, who in power really makes the decisions and how we make it through. In addition to a studio practice Josh engages with young people in the community through regular workshops and mural projects.

Zeth Cameron

Zeth Cameron (they/them) is an emerging installation artist interested in mixing media and moods as a form of audio-visual intervention. Their practice is grounded in their experiences with ADHD and gender non-conformity and embraces work that is tonally ambivalent or seemingly 'incomplete' as a sort of queer disability-led praxis.
