All That is Solid
All that is Solid reflects on the subjection of objects to the documentary gaze of the camera in the gallery space. The presence of both object and image is precarious. A fragile weave once displayed in the gallery exists now only as image, while a mutable object is recorded in real time. Depicting absent and protean objects, the distinction between photographic documentation and artwork is unsettled. Samantha McCulloch is concerned with art production and its relation to collaboration and context. Her approach, which encompasses sculpture, photography and video, is often concerned with the relationships between material place, constructed space and discursive site.
