Mimicking Google Earth’s Street View, Melbourne streets were filmed as I drove around my local areas. The footage was shot on an iPhone 5 taped to the car window, and the resulting scenes are random, unplanned and surprising. Screened silently, through sheets of broken glass, the relatively ordinary scenes are transformed into slowly evolving dramas, where passers-by play cameo roles in their own private narratives. Never knowing how these stories unfold, the viewer becomes involved, and shifts from casual observer to collaborator. The cracked glass abstracts and fragments the images. This manipulation enhances the work’s role as an homage to the 1960’s (70’s) police television show, ‘Homicide’. This gruff crime drama, and its gritty, portrayal of Melbourne, was a family favourite.
