In his trademark urgent style artist Troy Mendham obsessively attempts to make the same work over and over again. The first work made quickly, without thought or intention – on paper in a single bright lurid fluorescent pink – becomes the ‘breed standard’ – the template for all subsequent works. Success is judged by how closely subsequent works match the standards present in the master work. The work judged from close to 200 works to be the most ‘ideal’ will be awarded ‘best in breed’ and the glory that comes with it. Visitors are asked to judge the gallery full of works for themselves (based on the arbitrary criteria set forth in the master artwork) and using their own judging process determine if they agree with the judges choice of champion.
