Continuous Column / Endless Film
In 2014 Emma Hamilton travelled to Romania to see the seminal work, Endless Column (1935), of the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Her goal was to photograph Endless Column in a way that would give it the potential to be truly endless.
The Column speaks of the possibility of the continuous. Through photography, Endless Column is reinstated with its intended imposing height: appearing taller in photographs taken at the site than it does with the naked eye. The manipulation of the lens and the flattened photographic plane enable the ground to shrink away beneath Endless Column, and the banalities of park benches and rubbish bins to melt away into the inconsequential. It is in photography that the work stretches further towards the infinite space of the sky above it.
