Joanne Lichti is comforted by the escapism of watching movies. The illusionism and scopophilia of narrative cinema has been influenced by the Classical Hollywood Cinema of the 1950s, with its seamless editing, plot structure and visual language.
This video work is interested in the shift in social values since the 1950s as reflected by narrative cinema. Using cinema directed by women and attempting to reverse the male gaze, Lichti questions the relevance of past feminist film theory on the mainstream cinema of today.
