I used to do my hair with rollers, now I use a spray can and pliers.
Ruth O’Leary with words by Ellena Savage
Instead of a hair clip, use a stapler. Instead of nail polish, try spray paint! Lipstick covers the nose as well as the lips in this new video work by Ruth O’Leary. The artist has worked in collaboration with Melbourne based writer and editor Ellena Savage in writing a textual response that subtitles the video. Both Savage and O’Leary share an interest in representing the female body through their own research.
Working with her own body in performative practices Ruth O’Leary uses herself as a mannequin to ‘try on’ feminist concepts drawn from the past whilst constructing her own visual statements within contemporary feminist discourse.
Colour and humour is employed by the artist to entice and disguise the serious intent or message she wants to convey.
