Sartorial Bodies deploys textile and sculpture to destabilise the centrality and neutrality of particular identities within image-making in art and fashion. As an artist that claims oppositional identities, John Gosper adopts image-making and sculpture-making that challenge constructions of neutrality – particularly whiteness and thinness. Pouring liquid latex over wadding and foam, Gosper’s garments affirm representations of a ‘brown’ body. The garments are oversized dresses, smocks, wraps and have anthropomorphic elements worked into the design eg. brown skin, hair.
