The new forest
Lauren Simmonds’ work explores the freedom and restriction of movement through sculpture, installation and performance. Previous works have included a layering of sculpture, video and performance. Over the past 3 years she have been exploring movement specifically through works, which feature moving components such as paper, plastic, wood, natural materials [including light] and her body as the performer. She works predominately with fragile and often everyday materials that easily tear and disintegrate but also display unusual beauty. The innate qualities of the materials used influence the movement and emphasise their sensory qualities.
The new forest explores sound and movement through an installation of cut paper. Referencing our natural environment, Lauren Simmonds transforms the surfaces of Gallery one into a three dimensional moving soundscape. Like a memory of trees, sweeping fields or breathing lungs this work aims to quietly conjure the realization of our possible futures.
