Untitled (Study) #1
This work explores the fragility of life. Using iconic animal motifs the work becomes a dichotomy of life and death, and beauty and the grotesque. The reduction of the human skull to an item of food becomes a visual representation of the life cycle. It acts as a symbol of the idealised visions that many have towards the way we will eventually die and fertilise the earth. However, it is a romanticised vision that disregards the damaging reality we place on the ecosystem. We have evolved stereotypical symbolic attributes to these creatures; the butterfly tends to portray transformation, freedom and beauty in our society, while the rat is demonised as the bringer of death, an insidious opportunist inhabiting the urban underbelly. This experiment provides us with a study to judge the true characteristics of these animals.
