Vague Terrain: Things Calling
For her fifth solo exhibition, Upton responds to the call of the objects found within deconstructed spaces. She scavenges and curates the rubble, rocks and detritus from these sites and carefully replicates them in mortar, plaster and paint, creating contemporary fossils that are immediately archeological.
These creations map quietly monumental moments in the objects’ evolution – from useful thing to fractured ruin. Now forgotten and unused, they reveal the preciousness in the unnoticed. Here, these fleeting moments in time are immortalised.
Part museum exhibit, part fall out zone, Upton’s exhibition reveals the mystical qualities of these contemporary ruins – our own short history mimics the longer evolutionary trajectory of these objects. Just like the rock or branch or bottle or building, we are also on a process of decay – one day we will join the earth. Ultimately, we are all just matter, a minuscule part of the great cosmos.
