Fascinated by its divergent narrative that these two spaces hold, the fragmentation of my memories in Malaysia fused with the idiosyncratic features of Australian culture had inspired the creation of a visual amalgam. In search of that fine threshold, I explore the surfaces of the city in Malaysia - the rural shopfronts, the skin of buildings, the doorways, the curbs; witnessing how we inhabit the chaos of the city, and how the chaos inhabits us. Yet, whilst we do see the apparent disorder invading every corner, there is a sense of safety and ease of that at home. Through the emphasis on the reciprocal relationship between artistic practices and mechanisms of display, these structure and paintings attempt to merge the fragility of the past with the certainty of today, so as to rekindle with a new form of familiarity tinged with a sense of nostalgia.
Exhibition documented by Teagan Ramsay.

John Lim
John Lim attempt's to expand the intimate yet chaotic threshold where private experience encounters public space, using pattern, monochrome and texture to explore the deep history ingrained in his childhood experiences at his grandparents’ petit house in Penang, Malaysia. With this history in mind, Lim is interested in the differing aesthetics of public space in Australia and Malaysia. With work's exploring this contrast: the neglect and deterioration of community facilities in his hometown and the relatively pristine conditions of urban Australia
