Heartaches and miscommunication tend to happen within art group crits. Why? And how can we reduce it?
Our Creative Critters card deck proposes a toolkit to facilitate clear communication during art group critique sessions. In this event, we will unpack some common dynamics and experiences of art group critiques and reimagine a new structure that enables artists to leave a crit feeling empowered and inspired.

Event Rundown
Part 1: Panel on Art Crits and Creative Critters group-crit model. (1 hour)
In this section, you will hear different perspectives and experience of art group crits from the perspective of artists, creatives, art educators and art students. Unpack the system and dynamics of an art group crit with Jessica Tanto (initiator of Creative Critters), Jacqui Shelton (art educator and former art student) and members of the 2023 Creative Critters cohort.
Part 2: Group crit session using the Creative Critters card deck. (1.5 hours)
In this section, you will get feedback on your artwork in a structured and safe environment. You will practice giving and receiving effective art critique using the creative critters deck in a groups of 4-5 creatives.
NOTE: Please bring a creative project to participate in Part 2 of the event. All forms of finished, unfinished or documented creative project welcome.

Jessica Tanto
Jessica is an artist and art programmer born in Jakarta and currently studying in Naarm. Their artwork often responds to overlooked social norms and beliefs in a community. Jessica utilises creates community and participatory works to gather diverse perspectives on the questions that they pose in their work.
Jessica has shown with several institutions in Indonesia, Melbourne and Internationally including ruangrupa, GUDSKUL, Galeri Nasional, Ring Project: Jakarta Biennale, Nandur Srawung, Signal, Testing Grounds, Art Centre ONGOING and Tributary Projects. Jessica was awarded the 2021 Prince Claus Seed Awards, 2023 Les Kossatz Memorial Award and 2023 Trocadero Projects Award and received art residencies from Way Over There Collective x Connection Arts Space (2021), Remedial (2018), and Signal Arts (2023-4). Prior to graduating a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Monash University, they completed a masterclass on research-based art under FX Harsono (2019-2021) and a study on art collectives under GUDSKUL (2019).
