In ‘Like a heartbeat drives you mad,’ the artist transforms the gallery space into a weird treatment room, a noxious space where not-quite-right beautification and body horror collide. Drawing on the visual language of ASMR clips, instructional videos, and cult iconography, the audience bears witness to a noxious ritual. Hear the self-emulsifying catchcry shudder throughout the space: ‘be one with the gak’. ‘Like a heartbeat drives you mad’ offers a moment to share ridiculous communion with the anti-idol of panic and their hot tears of doom. Tread carefully here, things aren’t as they seem.Exhibition text by Lewis Gittus.Funding Acknowledgement: Yarra City Arts Small Project Grant

Drawing from cinema, pop culture, music, sex and mythology they create tongue-in-cheek monuments to care, fragility and embarrassment. Andrea’s work intersects joyful failure with magical dreaming, culminating in a playful practice that embraces multisensory experiences of video, performance, sculpture, textiles, painting, drawing and sound. Andrea uses humour as a tool to cultivate encounters between artist and audience that examine hot-and-prickly emotional states relating to shame, fear and sadness.
