This exhibition showcases an installation of ceramic and mixed media works that stem from Jethro Harcourt’s long-held fascination with symbols and logos. The works explore the relationship between logos and comfort as presented, ready-made, in the logo of the Comfort Inn motel chain. In 2018, at a convention in Las Vegas, Choice Hotels launched a redesign of the new Comfort Inn logo. This change was part of a larger $2.5b rebranding project that saw the franchise shed approximately 600 venues that did not meet brand standards. In that same year in the Latrobe Valley, Gippsland, a sex worker was charged for providing an illegal, ‘incall’ service out of room 75 of a local Comfort Inn. Today, this venue is now called the Quality Inn, another brand from the Choice Hotels stable. This series of coincidences form a speculative departure point for understandings of comfort and the role of the logo in the creative work. The exhibition explores the trivialities of our everyday designed environment and how things like logos sometimes find deeper resonances in our lives.
